The Connecticut Association of School Personnel Administrators’ mission is to promote and support best human resources practices in Connecticut Schools by providing valuable professional development and networking opportunities for all members. Many of the guiding principles, skills and abilities necessary to successfully lead the human resource function in a school system apply equally across various types of organizations. However, many of the rules that govern best practices in public education HR differ significantly from the private sector, and are intricately tied to knowledge of public education, education law, and other unique aspects of Connecticut school systems. As a result, CASPA seeks to fill an important role by providing professional tools and resources for HR Leaders in Connecticut public schools be successful. The organization generally meets five times each school year for professional development and networking opportunities, culminating in an annual conference in May. Administrators and support staff come together to share concerns and receive updates on legal information, collective bargaining negotiations, and best approaches to nurturing and developing human capital. Responsibility for the human resources office has grown more complex in recent years. Accountability for performance, fiscal integrity, state and federal compliance, and union negotiations drive the need for careful data collection and reporting. At the same time, school employees have the critical responsibility for shaping the learning and human development of children, and the human resource office has the sensitive role of both supporting and balancing the needs of the various constituencies and stakeholders. Our national affiliate, the American Association of School Personnel Administrators (AASPA) provides professional support and resources for human resources offices throughout the country and in several foreign countries. Connecticut is proud to host the 2009 international conference in Hartford, CT in October 2009. Please make every effort to attend this worthwhile and fun conference. Membership in CASPA and AASPA provides information, support and networking opportunities, both electronically and in person. CASPA’s new, interactive websites and our collaborative gatherings combine to assist both first time and seasoned human resources professionals. As a human resources professional working in a school environment, you will find no better targeted support. Join CASPA and add your talent to our resources! Craig Cooke, President
